Dear AOHT Students and Parents/Guardians,

We are about to begin an exciting new initiative at AOHT designed to further personalize our school for our students.  This initiative is the launching of our Advisory Program.

At AOHT, we strive not only to provide students with innovative and progressive programs, but also to implement these programs in a way that allows for ultimate success.  In order to achieve this, an Advisory Planning Committee was formed that reviewed, on multiple occasions, the Advisory Program.  This ensured that our Advisory Program addresses students’ needs from a variety of perspectives.  The committee consisted of teachers, administrators, parents, students, and NYC Department of Education and National Academy Foundation representatives.  It is because of the collaboration of all AOHT partners that this program will have a truly positive and real impact on our students’ success.

Some goals of our Advisory Program are as follows:

Advisors will:

®    Get to know students well as learners and as people

®    Facilitate regular workshops on the AOHT Core Values

®    Help students see the connection between success in school and options for the future

®    Guide students through activities that will require reflection on individual learning styles

®    Guide students through activities that require them to consider and reflect upon their academic achievements

Students will:

®    Feel a sense of belonging to a peer group

®    Have regular access to academic advising from an advisor who actively monitors their progress

®    Regularly engage in goal-setting and self-assessment

®    Learn to be more self-aware, self-managed, and self-directed

®    Develop cooperation and teamwork skills

®    Offer and find peer support

®    Contribute in a positive way to our school’s climate

®    Develop constructive peer relationships

In order to help our Advisors in their mission to serve your children, please complete a “Children’s Needs Informational Form” and send it back to school with your child.  The form should be delivered directly to your child’s advisor (these forms were already mailed home – if you have not received a copy, please call the school and we will make sure another copy is mailed and one is given to your child for hand-delivery).

On behalf of the students and entire community of AOHT, I thank the members of the AOHT Advisory Planning Committee.  They gave an enormous amount of time and energy in making sure that our Advisory Program is a success – for our students.  The great number of committee participants speaks only to the devotion of each individual to seeing AOHT students meet and rise above our High Expectations.

I invite you to actively participate in our community.  As you see with the Advisory Planning Committee, we are always looking for parents to join us in our efforts to continually assess our programs.  If serving our students better calls for the creation of something new – we do it.  But we need your help  If you have any questions, concerns or simply want to contact the school to find out how you can participate, please call the school at (718) 564-2580.  You can also email me directly at abreier@schools.nyc.gov.  Please remember – no matter how you make contact, you are welcome.

Sincerely yours,

Adam D. Breier
