December
21, 2007
Dear Members of the AOHT
Community,
As we near the December
holiday vacation, I thought it would be a great time to reflect on all of the
great things our community is up to.
Some of our accomplishments
from September 2007 until now are:
·
Four students
returned from summer internships at the Manhattan Marriott Marquis. These students were the first 9th
grade students to ever earn paid internships in the history of our 20 year old
program. Congratulations!
·
We doubled in
size!
·
We received an
absolutely glowing report from insideschools.org.
·
Students have
attended seventeen job-shadowing events (we had sixteen for the whole 2006-2007
school year) These events involved
taking tours of some of the largest, most successful corporations in the world
– thank you Mr. Francis!
·
Our business
program has located its central office and conference room where students will
benefit from mock interviews, boardroom meetings and business plan writing
sessions.
·
We established
our Coordinator of Student Affairs position and the space in which that program
will be centered along with the Student Leadership program that will accompany
it.
·
Our students met
Sanford Weil, former Chairman of Citigroup, Andrei Agassi,
former professional tennis champion, at the National Academy Foundation’s Gala
fundraising event in
·
Our students
prepared for and participated in our 3rd Semi-Annual Share Fair (an
event where the entire school spends the day celebrating academic achievement
and success)
·
Our Culinary
Program was inaugurated.
·
Ms. Rebecca
Wallace-Segall became our school’s Writing
Teacher-in-Residence guiding our 9th grade students in a memoir
writing project that will end in a professionally published book.
·
We launched our
“Teacher Pages” section of our school website so that teachers can post
homework assignments.
·
Our International
Food Club will be represented at the Village Voice Choice Eats event on March
11, 2008.
·
Ten sophomores
are applying to the College Now program that will allow them to earn tuition
free college credits during the Spring 2008 semester.
·
We successfully
appealed our Progress Report and had it changed to reflect our real successes
at AOHT. Feel free to view our new
Progress Report at: http://schools.nyc.gov/OA/SchoolReports/2006-07/ProgressReport_HS_K408.pdf
On behalf our growing AOHT
community, I thank you for your hard work, dedication and support. With you, our parents, faculty and friends,
our mission to create and foster a school where there are only High
Expectations for our students, is made into a reality. You can all feel proud about our students’
success!
I invite you to actively
participate in our community. If you
have any questions, concerns or simply want to contact the school to find out
how you can participate, please call the school at (718) 564-2580. You can also email me directly at abreier@schools.nyc.gov. Please
remember – no matter how you make contact, you are welcome.
Enjoy a well deserved and
earned holiday vacation. See you in
2008!
Sincerely yours,
Adam
