Message from the Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians and AOHT Community Members,

This is a truly exciting time to be a member of the AOHT community and I am pleased to take this moment to share with you the reasons why:

·         AOHT sent students to job-shadowing events to over 40 different companies so far this school year (and the number keeps growing).  These events involved taking tours of some of the largest, most successful corporations in the world.

·         AOHT’s African-American History Celebration was entirely designed, scripted, rehearsed and performed by our students.

·         We earned a fantastic report on our Quality Review.

·         Our partnership with the Anti-Defamation League is leading to 25 Students training to become Peer Mediation Specialists.

·         Our students earned over $500.00 in donations to benefit Breast Cancer Research while participating in the Breast Cancer Walk-a-Thon.

·         Our students earned the honor of donating $750.00 to the charity of their choice as a result of their amazing efforts at filling ten burlap bags filled to the brim with pennies during the Penny Harvest.

·         Our students met Sanford Weil, former Chairman of Citigroup, and Ursula Burns, president of Xerox, at the National Academy Foundation’s Gala fundraising event in NY, NY and AOHT fundraiser at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel..

·         Through our partnership with New York Cares, our students have volunteered at a hospice, coat drive, YMCA after school program, and volunteered to read letters to Santa written by children.

·         One of our students helped ring the opening bell for the New York Stock Exchange (see the video on our school website).

·         AOHT singlehandedly revived the PSAL Erasmus Hall Campus Swimming Team to great success.

·         We have launched our own Academy of Hospitality and Tourism at Erasmus Advisory Board.  On that board we have representatives of the NY/NJ Port Authority, CUNY City Tech Hospitality Program, Benchmark Furniture, the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge and Presbyterian Hospital.

·         Our Culinary students have begun selling a full menu of breakfast items to the faculty of AOHT and all Erasmus Hall Campus employees - all the feedback is that their croissants, rolls, apple turnovers, coffee, and hot chocolate are amazing.

·         Our students have already earned college credits at CUNY: City Tech and are still enrolled to earn more.

·         We hosted representatives from 7 schools from the nation-wide network of National Academy Foundation schools (San Francisco, Upstate NY, and NYC schools were here) so that we could share our profoundly successful tools for preparing our students for internships – and let me tell you, our visitors were impressed with our community!

I won’t fail to mention the following programs we have begun and are continuing this year: Project PEACE, Project READ, Junior Achievement High School Heroes, and so many more amazing things our students are doing, but we are running out of room here.  Believe me when I say that I am thrilled to be running out of paper – it is because our community is accomplishing SO MUCH.  You should all be proud of your work.  We have come together even closer as a community and added an entirely new constituent – our Advisory Board – to the AOHT family.  Though this is only our third year as a school, it has been our most monumental yet!

If you have any questions, concerns or simply want to contact the school to find out how you can participate in any of our programs, please call the school at (718) 564-2580.  You can also email me directly at abreier@schools.nyc.gov.

It continues to be an honor to serve as your principal!

Sincerely yours,

Adam D. Breier
